    A Green-Themed Show

Featuring the Work of 107 Regional Artists

    July 23 – August 28, 2010

    Opening Reception: Friday, July 23, 5 -7pm

Juror: Monroe Denton, Critic, Art Historian and Faculty Member at the School of Visual Arts in New York City

AVA Gallery and Art Center’s Seventeenth Annual Juried Summer Exhibition: a Green-Themed Show, will be on display throughout the galleries at 11 Bank Street in Lebanon, NH from Friday, July 23 through Saturday, August 28, during gallery hours (Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 5pm or by appointment.)

AVA’s Seventeenth Annual Juried Summer Exhibition opens with a reception, free and open to the public, on Friday, July 23, from 5 – 7pm. The exhibition is generously sponsored by Mascoma Savings Bank.

The works on display were selected from 363 entries submitted by 224 artists from 86 communities throughout Vermont and New Hampshire.  Juror Monroe Denton-critic, art historian and faculty member at the School of Visual Arts in New York City-selected 142 works by 107 artists for the exhibition.  Denton states: “I am aware of how… all the artists in this exhibition fulfill the essential role of the visual artist in our society to organize the perception of our world, to focus our attention, and to lead us to a discovery of the underlying truth of this marvelous ecology.”

This year, the Juror’s Recognition Awards were given to Pat Giebutowski of Rumney, NH for her egg tempera work, “Entanglement”; to Duncan Johnson of Hartford, VT for his reclaimed wooden wall sculptures, “Stackhouse” and “Slide”; and to Elizabeth Mayor of Hanover, NH for her woodcut prints, “Half. Just Use It.” and “Right Angles. Not Touching.”  The three award winners will receive cash prizes made possible by Mascoma Savings Bank’s sponsorship of this exhibition.

The Annual Juried Summer Exhibition is a unique opportunity to see artwork in a variety of media and styles by artists who will be both familiar and new to AVA visitors (25 of the 107 participating artists are first-time exhibitors at AVA).

The Seventeenth Annual Juried Summer Exhibition is free and open to the public during gallery hours (Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 5pm or by appointment.)  AVA is also open for additional hours on Thursday evenings, from 5 – 7pm throughout the summer.  The exhibition will remain on display through Saturday, August 28, 2010.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    August 11, 2010

    VINS Presents Ornamental Pruning 101
Quechee, VT – The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) will celebrate the wonderful world of gardening on Saturday, August 28 with Ornamental Pruning 101.  This workshop will introduce gardening masters and novices alike to the science and art of pruning.  This hands-on session will run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at VINS Nature Center.

Not only is pruning critically important to a healthy, vibrant garden, it also opens doors to a world of artistic possibilities.  In this workshop, participants will learn to prune with a purpose and without fear.

The first two hours of class will cover proper pruning techniques, the world of pruning tools and the best times to prune common species of ornamental trees and shrubs.  After a lunch break, the class will head out into the field and work with living trees on the VINS Nature Center campus.

Ornamental Pruning 101 will be led by Dann Ladd and Treenen “Tree” Sturman.  Dann has been grafting living trees into architectural and geometric forms for more than 30 years.  He has worked on projects at the UCSD Gallery of Art, the city of Pittsburg/Carnegie Mellon, and the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln Mass, to name a few.

Tree is the Vice President for Programs at VINS.  He joined VINS from the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, IL where he served as the Manager of Science Education.  He holds an M.S. degree in Public Horticulture from the Longwood Graduate Program at the University of Delaware.  His horticultural hobbies include caring for his collection of Malagasy orchids, vegetable gardening, native habitat design and ornamental pruning.

Join VINS to learn the history of the marvelous practice of pruning, the biology and botany of trees, and simple bending, joining and fastening techniques to make instant sculptures.

Registration for this workshop is requested by August 23 by calling 802-359-5000 x223.  Ornamental Pruning 101 is $40 for non-members and $30 for VINS members.  For more information about this and other programs at VINS, please visit www.vinsweb.org.

VINS is a non-profit, member-supported environmental education, research and avian rehabilitation organization headquartered on Route 4 in Quechee, VT. VINS places a priority on making high-quality, compelling and fun environmental education programs and learning opportunities accessible to more people and communities.  Stay connected with VINS through our website at www.vinsweb.org and nature blog at vtnature.blogspot.com.
