Adult Learner Scholarship Information

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Scholarship Application The applications will be available at all colleges in the area, including Lebanon College, Community College of Vermont, River Valley Community College, Franklin Pierce University and Granite State College, New England School of Hair Design, Upper Valley Educators Institute.

All applications must be countersigned by the institution where you will be taking the course, to insure that you are, in fact, enrolled there, and then can be returned to the Chamber of Commerce office in person 1 School Street, The Village House, Lebanon, or by mail P.O. Box 97, Lebanon, NH 03766 or by Fax to: 603-448-6489.

About Lebanon Area Chamber Scholarships:

1. What is the Chamber Scholarship Fund?

It is a fund, established by gifts and fund-raising events from the Chamber’s 350 plus members in the business  community, to assist adult or “non-traditional” students who are taking courses, mainly to improve their employment or employability in the local community, while at the same time struggling with the demands of a job, family, etc.

2. Who is eligible to apply?

This fund is NOT aimed at traditional students, recent high school graduates, taking a full-time college course. To be eligible, a student must be taking or planning to take a part-time course of studies in the local area at an institution such as Granite State College, Lebanon College, Community College of Vermont, River Valley Community College, Franklin Pierce University, New England School of Hair Design, Upper Valley Educators Institute, or some recognized professional training institution.

3. How much is available to be awarded?

It appears that between $2,000 and $2,500 will be available for the  academic year.  The amount each year will of necessity fluctuate, with the ability of the Chamber to raise funds, generate grants, etc.

4. How much will be awarded to each student or applicant?

This will depend on the number of deserving applicants and available funds.  We hope the cost of the course it is applied for– ordinarily in the $150 to $400 range—and the preference factors listed below.  It is hoped to be able to supply between 40% and 80% of the course costs, and, in doing this, the committee also recognizes that many applicants will face costs beyond the basic tuition—books or materials, transportation, baby-sitting, etc.

5. To whom will preference be given?

There will be three groups or classes to whom preference will be given: First, will be students who reside in Lebanon or are employed by Lebanon or Lebanon Chamber of Commerce member businesses.  Another preference group will be students whose prospective courses are directly related to their present employment or employability, as opposed to those who might be taking

enrichment” or liberal arts courses.  The third preference group will be students who show a real need for funding assistance, and/or for whom the tuition and other costs would be a hardship.

6.  What will be the timing of the scholarship awards? How soon will we know?

In general, the application process will be geared to local colleges’ semesters or terms.  We hope to make awards in  August (for fall semester), in January for the spring term.  If necessary and if there are available funds, the committee could consider awards for short courses at odd times of the year as well.  To help students plan their courses and finances, there will be no more than a 30-day period between the application deadline and the notification of awards.

7. Who will decide on the scholarship awards?

A special Lebanon Chamber Scholarship Fund board of Trustees has been established—independent of the Chamber and its Directors to make those decisions.  The Trustees will include both Chamber members and non-members who are knowledgeable about student and scholarship affairs and all applications will be held strictly confidential.
Application fill out form and submit accordingly.  Good Luck!

Holiday Cheer on the Lebanon Opera House Stage with

A Leahy Family Christmas!

This Christmas, Upper Valley audiences will be treated to a unique concert experience as the Canadian musical powerhouse Leahy takes the stage for A Leahy Family Christmas, Monday, December 20 at 7:30 PM! Seats are $28 or $38, with discounts available for seniors and children, and can be purchased at the Lebanon Opera House Box Office in person or via phone at 603-448-0400. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.lebanonoperahouse.org.

Leahy is comprised of eight musical brothers and sisters who have been playing together their entire lives. The band’s four acclaimed CDs – Leahy, Lakefield, In All Things, and Leahy Live – have world-wide sales of over half-a-million copies. They opened up for Shania Twain on her first World Tour and were the subject of an Academy Award winning documentary on the life and music of their family.  Their countless awards and accolades span many musical genres, from traditional roots, folk, and country to pop, jazz, and classical.  This helps to explain why their unique style and original sound has come to be known as “Leahy.”

A Leahy Family Christmas is a multifaceted experience that takes audiences on a sensory and emotional ride through music, dance and song.  In some numbers, Leahy will be joined onstage by their children to sing, play, and dance – just as they would if they were at a Leahy gathering back home in Lakefield, Ontario Canada.

Audiences will not only be treated to Christmas classics and new Leahy material set to be released next year, but their performance will be interspersed with Christmas stories. From sacred hymns and slow airs to a smorgasbord of fiery tunes and Christmas carols, A Leahy Family Christmas covers the full spectrum of Christmas music.

As Donnell Leahy explains, “Music has always been a huge part of our Christmas experience.  As children, if it wasn’t for all of the lights and decorations everywhere, we knew it was Christmas because there was a musical gathering every night of the week.   Our house would be alive with people, music, dance and song!   Children and adults alike all joined in and participated in the festivities.   This is one aspect of our Christmas show that we’re looking forward to the most, bringing the audience in on all of the action taking place on stage.  That may be where the music starts, but it won’t be where it ends.  You can’t attend a Christmas gathering and not be expected to join in on all of the fun!”

Watching a Leahy performance is always an extraordinary experience.  You can’t help but feel transported into another time and space — be it their living room back in Lakefield on a snowy December night, or one of many Cathedrals around the world on Christmas Eve.  A Leahy Family Christmas will make audiences feel like they’ve been taken on one of the most exhilarating Christmas adventures of their lives.  And to think, all in one show, on one night and from one family.  Let the season begin!

Leahy is:

Siobheann Leahy – bass, piano, fiddle, singer, dancer

Donnell Leahy – fiddle, dancer

Maria Leahy – guitar, piano, fiddle, singer, dancer

Agnes Leahy – dancer, piano, fiddle, singer

Doug Leahy – fiddle, dancer

Erin Leahy – keyboards, fiddle, singer, dancer

Angus Leahy – fiddle, piano, dancer

Frank Leahy – drums, dancer

This show is sponsored by The Point and Lebanon Village Pizza.
