VINS Blends Art and Conservation with the
2nd Annual Art on a Rain Barrel Contest and Festival

Quechee, VT – The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) has joined together with Upcycle Products and Home Depot of West Lebanon to present Art on a Rain Barrel: a free art contest and festival that challenges adults and children to exercise their creativity on behalf of water conservation and stewardship.

The Art on a Rain Barrel contest and festival highlight the importance of rain barrels as a tool that everyone can use to conserve precious water resources. Rain barrels catch rain from roofs, storing water that can be used to care for lawns and gardens or even wash your car.  One 55-gallon rain barrel can help the average household save 1,300 gallons of water in a single summer!  The use of rain barrels also helps reduce runoff that can erode and pollute rivers and streams and saves money and resources that would otherwise be used to pump water from wells or municipal water systems.

The festival will be held on Saturday, May 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and is open to everyone.  The public is invited to watch as each artist paints their design with paints provided by Home Depot of West Lebanon on a 100% upcycled rain barrel – courtesy of Upcycle Products ( www.upcycle-products.com).

Scheduled to appear at the event is the new Wonders of Wetlands (WoW Express) traveling exhibit from the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge.  All VINS exhibits will be open, and live bird programs will be offered at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Registration materials and a complete Art on a Rain Barrel contest and festival schedule are available at www.vinsweb.org.  Artists who pre-register prior to April 30, 2011 will receive a FREE rain barrel.  Questions should be directed to 802-359-5000 ext. 232 or info@vinsweb.org.

The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) is a non-profit, member-supported environmental education, research and avian rehabilitation organization headquartered on Route 4 in Quechee, VT.  VINS’ mission is to motivate individuals and communities to care for the environment with a priority placed on making high-quality, compelling and fun environmental education programs and learning opportunities accessible to more people and communities.  Stay connected with VINS through our nature blog at vtnature.blogspot.com and our website at www.vinsweb.org.

Commissioners’ Regional Business Outreach session

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011
April 29, 2011

On behalf of Governor Lynch and the Governor’s Jobs Cabinet, it gives me great pleasure to invite you to the Commissioners’ Regional Business Outreach session scheduled for Friday, April 29th at 7:30 a.m. in the Puksta Library at the River Valley Community College, located at 1 College Drive, Claremont.

This two-hour session is the result of feedback from recent Governor’s Jobs Cabinet Roundtables that were held throughout the state. Many business owners had expressed an interest in learning more about the free services offered by state government as well as to have a forum to ask questions that would help their companies grow and thrive in the Granite State.

These sessions were developed to give you the opportunity to listen to brief presentations by the commissioners, and also have a chance to meet with the commissioners and their staff members one-on-one following the event.

Here’s a list of Commissioners and some of the presentation topics they’re planning to address at the event:

NH Employment Security (Tara Reardon) – The State’s Job Match System, the new Unemployment Insurance computer system and the NH Working Initiative.

NH Department of Administrative Services (Linda Hodgdon) – How companies can do business with the state, contract opportunities and the new Vendor Self Service registration system

NH Department of Environmental Services (Tom Burack) – A discussion of the six business assistance services DES offers free of charge on a confidential basis.

NH Department of Resources & Economic Development (George Bald) – Job Training Fund, Research & Development Tax Credit, Energy Audit program.

Community College System of NH (Dick Gustafson) – Discussion of how the System can tailor training and educational programs to meet the specific skilled workforce needs of business.

NH Department of Insurance (Roger Sevigny) – A discussion of the NH HealthFirst, an initiative to help local small businesses provide health insurance to their employees.

NH Department of Labor (George Copadis) – Labor law seminars and the top ten labor law violations and how to avoid them.

To pre-register, please RSVP to Pat Salvucci at psalvucci@labor.state.nh.us by April 27th. For additional details and parking instructions, please call Pat at 271-3171.

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you on April 29th!
