Jim Wechsler was a coach, educator and former Executive Director of the Lebanon Area Chamber of Commerce. He made a tremendous impact on our community, in little and large ways.
Joe Scearbo of Mascoma Savings Bank shared this memory of Jim:
I first had the privilege and good fortune to meet Coach Wechsler as a member of the freshman boys’ basketball team at Lebanon High School in 1993. It quickly became apparent that Jim’s impact on me would go well beyond teaching me about the fundamentals of basketball. I was going through a difficult time in my life, and Jim sensed that and reached out to me. He found out that I was an avid collector of sports cards and so he took me to a local memorabilia show. It was only a couple hours of his time, but the olive branch of kindness he extended to me that day had a profound impact on me. He showed that he truly cared about me as a person and didn’t simply view me through the lens of a basketball coach looking to develop talent into a winning team (this was especially good for me as I lacked talent).
Coach Wechsler’s teaching instruction on the court also left lasting impressions. He inspired me to push myself to achieve excellence. He taught me discipline and the importance of a strong work ethic. Coach Wechsler was in many ways a father figure to us all. It is with gratitude and great fondness that I look forward to participating and furthering the cause of any initiative that bears his name and helps his legacy to be just as important as his life was.
